Course objectives (annotation):

The course Czech Literature for Interested and Foreigners will offer students an insight into the specifics of the development of Czech literature after 1945, with an emphasis on contemporary works that have an international impact and are translated abroad. World authors, whose work is translated into our country and has an influence on the formation of Czech literature, will also be reflected.

The course has three basic parts: explanatory (presentation), in which students are acquainted with the development of Czech literature after 1945, with important historical milestones and their influence on the form of works by Czech artists; interpretive and discussion, in which students are acquainted with specific texts of important Czech and foreign (translation) authors; application, in which students are introduced to the overlaps of Czech literary works in music, fine arts, and film.

Requirements:

Participation in the seminars, study of literature (course moodle), reading literary texts, watching a movie, listening to music, preparation for discussion on selected topics within the seminars, elaboration of seminar work in English (4 pages on a topic connected with the discipline content, based on the student's research).

Evaluation - points:

  • participation in seminars (10 points);
  • individual reading literary texts, watching a movie, listening to music (10 points);
  • individual study course moodle (10 points);
  • seminar work (30-70 points).

Student must obtain min. 50 points.

Topics of lectures:

  1. Development of Czech literature after 1945, important historical milestones and their influence on the form of works by Czech authors.
  2. Contemporary Czech literary works and the problems of its reception. Samples of high-style, middle-current, and junk literature.
  3. Czech authors in foreign translations (M. Kundera, B. Hrabal, J. Škvorecký, P. Horáková, J. Katalpa, K. Tučková, J. Hájíček, E. Hakl, M. Ajvaz etc.), world authors translated into Czech (J. Barnes, M. Amis, W. Boyd, K. Ishiguro, I. McEwan, G. Swift, K. Vonnegut, K. Kesey, W. Saroyan, I. B. Singer, M. Atwood, P. Ackroyd).
  4. Relationships between Czech literature and fine arts in the Czech cultural context (Pre-war civilian modernism, Surrealist group, Group 42).
  5. Czech literature after 1945 in contact with music (see, e.g., J. Kainar, V. Hrabě, J. Nohavica, V. Mišík, Plastic People of the Universe, Dog Soldiers, K. Plíhal etc.).
  6. Selected works of Czech literature after 1945 in the form of famous film adaptations (e.g., J. Menzel, M. Forman, J. Hřebejk, F. Renč, V. Michálek, F. A. Brabec).
