Education of Individuals with Physical Disabilities and Chronic Conditions (SPG/E-SOM)

Synopsis / description / annotation:

Course Objectives:

The goal of the subject is to introduce basics of the field (complex care of individuals with physical disabilities and chronic conditions). It will focus on etiology, characteristics and symptomatology of the most commonly dealt disabilities, chronic as well as rare diseases. Based on this knowledge it will further address the impact of disability / chronic diseases on the quality of education and school success. It will emphasize use of supportive measures in educational process (assessment, counselling, different types of supportive measures, specific teaching methods, knowledge of selected assistive technologies, didactic and compensatory aids and their use). The aim is to develop basic practical skills focused on enhancement of fine motor/graphomotor skills, communication and use of elements of selected therapies. Furthermore, the goal is to point out the interdisciplinary cooperation known as complex rehabilitation.

Requirement to student

  • You are expected to complete all assigned readings and exercises.
  • Participation also means: active involvement in discussion, postings, individual and group activities.
  • Analysis of the books, different texts related to the topics of the course.
  • Preparing the presentation on the selected topic of the course.
  • Presentation and Interpetation.
  • Discusssion.

Content:

1. Current classification and terminological definition used in a field.
2. Characteristic of etiology and symptomatology of most frequently dealt disabilities, chronic conditions and rare diseases.
3. The current situation in education of individuals with physical disability and chronic diseases. Organisation of hospital schools
4. Counselling system in the Czech Republic.
5. Complex rehabilitation – it´s components, importance of multidisciplinary dialogue and co-operation.
5. Education of individuals with physical impairment/ chronic diseases in mainstream schools - (teaching methods, counselling, supportive means) versus education in special schools
6. Contemporary assistive technologies, compensatory, didactic aids and their use
7. - 8. Introduction to therapies, alternative and augumentative communication, alternative training of writing skills, applied physical education
9. – 11. Excursion to institutions (spa, school for children with SEN/D, counselling centre)
12. - 13. Case studies – problem solution based teaching/learning
