  • Status of the course in the degree programme: The course is provided by the Department of Education and Adult Education for Erasmus students, especially for those studying teacher education programmes.

Annotation:

The subject is based on current approaches to the education of gifted students in elementary and secondary schools. The presence of gifted students is taken into account in current legislation and school curriculum documents. The seminar offers students familiarization with pedagogical activities used to manage the educational specifics of working with gifted students. Students will be introduced to methods of identifying gifted students in classes, based on the key concepts of talent and gift. After completing the course, the student will be able to identify the presence of a gifted student in the classroom, to use modern educational strategies, to create individual learning plans for gifted pupils, to respect the specifics of gifted pupils, and to make effective use of educational options for gifted pupils' education.

Requirements:

Students must actively participate in seminars and discuss selected topics.

Aims and objectives:

Students will acquire:

  • The ability to identify a gifted student
  • Knowledge of the specifics of gifted children and managing appropriate pedagogical approaches
  • The ability to create an IEP for a gifted student
  • Knowledge of activating teaching methods for gifted students
  • The ability to use the presence of a gifted student to increase the efficiency of educational activities
  • The skill to properly use appropriate teaching methods, activating and motivating talented students - the ability to manage the presence of a gifted student in the class and adapt teaching strategies to their needs (with regard to the goals of teaching).

Topics of workshops:

  1. The concepts of talent and gift from historical and contemporary perspectives.
  2. Definitions, models and concepts of talent, intelligence, creativity, Gaussian curve values of IQ in the current population.
  3. The influence of heredity and environment on talent.
  4. Identification of gifted students.
  5. Characteristics/signs of gifted students in the classroom.
  6. Specific approaches to teaching gifted students, learning needs of gifted students.
  7. Social and emotional difficulties of gifted children.
  8. Preparing teachers for a lesson in which a gifted student is present.
  9. Inclusion of a gifted student in a traditional class group from the viewpoint of pedagogical practice.
  10. Training in teaching skills for work with gifted students - practical application of activating teaching methods, creation of materials for gifted students, creating an IEP for gifted students.
